Our property management roots trace back to 1945, and The Housing Guild was formally founded in 1977. For decades, owners and families who value consistency, strong systems, and a high standard of care have trusted us to look after their buildings.
In 2017, Ryan Shane took the helm of the firm his father founded — blending a deep family legacy with modern, investment-minded management. We were built to serve owners who want more than "basic management": people who have invested years, often decades, into their property and want it operated responsibly, protected, and improved over time.
At our core, we operate with an owner's mindset — because we are property owners ourselves. Good management isn't just collecting rent and answering maintenance calls; it's making thoughtful decisions, protecting asset value, managing risk, and steadily improving how a property performs.

Ryan leads The Housing Guild with a unique perspective as both an owner and operator. Originally a value-add investor in San Francisco's multifamily market, he moved into property management to bring an owner's mindset to the service side. In 2017 he took the helm of the firm his father founded in 1977, blending a deep family legacy with modern investment expertise.

With over 30 years of experience across residential and commercial real estate, Matthew oversees our entire management team. A dual-certified CCRM and CRM professional, he ensures operational excellence across the portfolio. His technical depth and decades of industry experience make him the backbone of our daily operations.

Many of our clients live outside the Bay Area — some internationally — and trust The Housing Guild to manage their property with full operational oversight, consistent execution, and clear reporting, without needing to be on the ground. Owners can be as involved as they prefer: closely engaged, or fully hands-off with a monthly report. Either way, our job is the same — manage carefully, communicate clearly, and make sure you never feel you have to "manage the property manager."
We are a licensed California brokerage (DRE #01872112), and our team holds professional certifications spanning accounting and property management — including CPA, CCRM, and ARM designations, with a CPA on staff. Our 24/7 emergency line is answered with bilingual support (English and Spanish). Continuing education keeps us current with the Bay Area's constantly evolving rental laws.
